Hi, I’m Hayden.
For years I’ve been fascinated by one question: why do some people become exceptionally good at difficult things, while others never move beyond intention?
It’s not intelligence. It’s not talent, or at least not mainly. The people I admire most in demanding fields tend to share something harder to name: a particular relationship with effort, with failure, with the long and unglamorous middle of any serious pursuit.
The Mastery Project is my attempt to figure out what that something is: not just by reading and researching, but by doing. I am, at any given moment, working on several things that are much harder than I can currently manage. Climbing grades I haven’t reached. Piano pieces I can’t yet play. Languages I cannot yet speak.
I document all of this honestly. The failures, the plateaus, the occasional breakthrough. Not to perform progress, but because I think honest documentation of the process, warts and all, is more useful than the polished retrospective most people share once they’re already good.
The essays explore the ideas. The podcast digs into the psychology, the research, and the real experience of people who have gone deep into difficult things. The experiments page is the live record.
This is not a self-improvement blog. There are no hacks, shortcuts, or ten-step frameworks here. What I’m interested in is harder and slower than that, and I think more honest.
“The long patient work of getting better at things that matter.”
What this project believes
01
Effort over talent
Capacity is built, not bestowed. The interesting question is never whether you have talent, but what you do with the years you have.
02
Process over outcome
Outcomes are partly luck. Process is entirely yours. The work itself, done honestly and repeated faithfully, is the only thing in your control.
03
Honesty over performance
Most documentation of mastery is retrospective and flattering. This project tries to document the mess in real time, as it happens.
